Chichester Boat Club an RYA Training Centre

We have a team of friendly and highly experienced instructors that will prepare you for a safe and enjoyable time on the water. Run using our dedicated training boat from Itchenor sailing club, ideally placed to cover all aspects of this comprehensive course. If you decide to join Chichester Boat Club, we will refund the cost of the course.

A minimum of 2 people are required to run a Powerboat course but don’t worry, if it’s just you looking for training we will probably have someone else looking to do the same. All courses are run with a maximum of 3 people on the boat. Get in touch to book on to one of our dates.

Age 12+     Max 3 per course     2 days 

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or coastal location. It will be conducted on one of our Ribs. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

£375 per person.

Age 16+     Max 3 per course     2 days

This course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques. It aims to teach the standard required to complete a short coastal passage by day. This course builds on the foundation knowledge of the Level 2 course and is suited to those who aim to drive larger more powerful powerboats. During the course you will cover cruising at planing speed and more advanced boat handling. It is recommended for anyone considering moving on to the Advanced course. The course will be conducted on a planing boat.

Required Experience

Candidates should be competent to the standard of RYA Powerboat Level 2. It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid and VHF/SRC operator’s certificate and have knowledge to the level of Day Skipper theory.

Age 17+     Max 3 per course     2 day

This Course aims to teach boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a planing powerboat safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters, with which the candidate may be familiar, in more demanding conditions. Given the nature of these passages Advanced Powerboat courses should be delivered on powerboats of a minimum of 6 metres and an engine size sufficient to enable coastal passages at planing speed.

Age 17+     Max 3 per course     2 day

Designed in conjunction with the Professional Yachting Association this course is intended to build on a candidate’s basic powerboating knowledge and skills. Attendees will gain confidence in their ability to manoeuvre a powerboat more smoothly. The emphasis is on learning important skills in day and night pilotage and passenger carriage and management. This course is very useful for anyone operating a powerboat day or night with responsibility for carrying passengers. The course includes plenty of time to practice working with a crew member and operating short-handed. Candidates will practice and become familiar with pilotage for short passages from ship to shore, both day and night.

Required experience
 
Candidates should be competent to the standard of RYA Powerboat Level 2 Powerboat Handling with a coastal endorsement. It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid and VHF / SRC operators certificate.

Experience

Five seasons experience of powerboating logged (preferably in range of boat types and sizes) OR one season for those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation.

Pre-entry assessment

Candidates must attend a skills assessment prior to their instructor training course. Details can be found in the RYA Power Schemes Instructor Handbook (G19) 

Training course

Three day course assessed by an independent Trainer on the third day.

Qualified to teach

Up to and including Powerboat Level 2 under the supervision of the Principal or Chief Instructor. If you hold the Safety Boat Certificate, you may also teach the RYA Safety Boat Course. 

Validity 

Five years from date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained.

For those who have their own powerboat/motor cruiser and would like some extra tuition to brush up their skills or even learn some new skills. This can also include a day where owners can get to familiarise themselves with all the technology on their boat, from learning to set up the Marine Radio to inputting complex routes into the Chartplotter.

£698 per course (max 3 Students)

Age 12+     Max 3 per course     1/2 day 

For those who already have power boat experience, this half day allows you to brush upon the skills needed to gain the RYA power boat level 2 certificate. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

For those who have their own powerboat/motor cruiser and would like some extra tuition to brush up their skills or even learn some new skills. This can also include a day where owners can get to familiarise themselves with all the technology on their boat, from learning to set up the Marine Radio to inputting complex routes into the Chartplotter.

Age 8+     Max 3 per course     1 day 

Provides a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. It covers boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. The course will be conducted on one of our Ribs and the certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place. A one day introduction to Powerboating with no previous experience required.
